Peace in the Midst of Violence

Spread the love

The surge of violence in the world in the past few years has caused many to fear.  They fear for the safety and well-being of their loved ones as well as the overall state of the world.  What’s going to happen to us?  Are we in danger? Is there any hope of peace, order and good?

What we have seen these past few years include lies, hatred, murder, injustice, and rebellion.  All of these do not come from God but from our enemy, the devil.  Therefore, what we are witnessing are his works.  To undo the works of the devil, we need Jesus (1 John 3:8).  The enemy will always try to lead us astray.  His goal is to keep us away from God – dead in the grave.  We need to be sober and vigilant and recognize his works in order to keep away from them (1 Pet 5:8).

Aside from our earthly government we have our Heavenly government.  Even if our earthly King/President cannot offer us protection, we are still protected and have our Spiritual law to abide by.  The laws that God put in place are there to protect us from the consequences of sin and keep us out of trouble (Lev 18:1-30, Titus 2:12, Gal 5:22-23).

We cannot control what other people do, but we can control what WE do.  We are the light of the world and the salt of the earth.  We bring light by being more and more like God and letting His Spirit dwell in us.  If God’s Spirit is in us, we:

  • Know ALL humans were created by God in His image and do not regard anyone to be above anyone else (Gen 1:26-28, Rom 3:8)
  • Respect authority and the law of the land (Eccl 8:2-5, Rom 13:1-7, Titus 3:1, 1 Pet 2:13-14)
  • Admonish others in love (Psalm 141:5, Luke 17:3, 1 Thess 5:14)
  • Share the good news with anyone who will receive it, not forcefully (Matt 28:19-20, John 1:12, Acts 2:41)
  • Don’t give in to the devil’s tactics, where he tries to instigate anger, hatred and violence (2 Cor 11:3, 2 Thes 2:9-10, Eph 6:10-13)

Since the beginning, the devil has been very crafty.  He makes subtle moves to get us to move further and further away from God.  He plants seeds of doubt, disbelief, anger and fear.  His latest tactic has been the “isms”, with racism, classism, and religion being at the forefront.  As a Dominican woman born of working parents and raised in the United States, one could say the odds were against me to succeed.  I could have stayed where most of those in my “category” stayed, but to me, the sky was always the limit (whether I actually aimed for it or not).  While in college, many were trying to convince me that I was a victim of society, of exploitation and injustice because of my race.  I didn’t buy it, though I know many did.  One of the many things the devil is, is a liar.  He wants to deceive some of us into believing that we are powerless victims.

The truth is, we are ALL more powerful than we think we are.  The sky IS the limit!  Through my family (my mother in particular) and the gifts God has given me, He has taught me to believe in myself.  I am still very hard on myself and could be better, but knowing that my God is with me gives me strength and comfort.  I know I can handle any situation with Him.  If someone wants to kill me for being a Christian or for being a Latina, and gets away with it, I know my God will repay (Rom 12:19, Heb 10:31).  And, I know that the evil they try to do, God will work out for good (Gen 50:20, Rom 8:28).  The peace that this truth brings is unsurmountable!

Let us, therefore, not fear what men can do to us (Psa 23:4, Psa 118:6).  Greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4)!daniel and the lion's den

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” – John 14:27 (NKJV)
