Why Jesus? Why not Gandhi or Muhammad or Buddha? With so many religions in the world, it is easy to get overwhelmed, frustrated and confused. How do you know which one is true, if any? And, why doesn’t God make this easier for us? If you are interested in getting to know God and are asking any of these questions, I hope this post will help.
First of all, I would like to point out that the enemy (the devil) doesn’t want us to get close to God and have a relationship with Him. One of his tactics for keeping us away is by causing divisions and confusions. Don’t let him win! If you seek God with ALL your heart, you will find Him! Don’t give up.
Secondly, it is important to realize that many of today’s religions originate from one of the major five: Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. Thus, if we focus on this smaller group we can narrow down our choices much quicker and more easily. So, let’s do that.
While doing research for this topic I came to realize that there is a lot of overlap between these five religions. For instance, the majority believe in being kind to others, karma, daily prayer/meditation, impermanence of our existence in this world, and the existence of a Higher being. There are many good things that can be taken from these religions’ beliefs, philosophies and customs. For instance, the practice of yoga has many physical and emotional benefits. There are also great men represented by these religions, such as Moses, Buddha, Gandhi or Muhammad. The intelligence, courage and humility they exhibited during their lifetime is undisputed and worthy of respect. However, the question still remains, why choose Jesus over these other admirable men? While these men are great, Jesus is simply more.
Jesus is more than a prophet and messenger of God (Moses, Muhammad). He is more than a teacher and philosopher (Buddha). He is more than a revolutionary and advocate for justice (Gandhi). And, He is more than a man (Moses, Buddha, Muhammad, Gandhi). He is the Son of God (Matt 16:16, John 1:14-18), who came to this world out of love for humankind to restore the relationship between God and man (John 3:16-17) and give us life abundantly (John 10:10). He came to show us the way to the Father (John 14:6). He came to heal the sick (Matt 8:2-3, 11:5), free those in bondage, resurrect the dead (Matt 9:23-25, John 11:25-26), console the weeping and undo the deeds of the devil (1 John 3:8). He came to defeat death (1 Cor 15:55-57). And, He is the only one out of all these religious leaders who is alive TODAY! Moses, Buddha, Muhammad and Gandhi are great men, but none of them can heal the sick, resurrect the dead, calm storms, and come back from the dead. Only Jesus can. Only Jesus can cleanse our sins and only Jesus can bring us to God. This is why He is above ALL men.
Then, choose Jesus because He chose you and loves you so much that He died so you may live. He is the only one with the power and omnipresence to be with you at all times and provide comfort, wisdom and protection. He is the only one that can intercede for you, continuously cleanse your sins and bring you into the Presence of the Almighty God. He is the life, the truth and the way (John 14:6)!
If you believe that Jesus is the Son of God, confess, repent and are baptized for the forgiveness of sins you will be saved and your relationship with God restored. Being a Christian is the best thing on earth. No matter what life brings, we know everything will be okay because God is with us helping us through. Your worst day with Jesus will be better than your best day without Him. Don’t go through life without Jesus!
